A toy sized dog with a larger than life personality, the Pomeranian is one of the many smaller breeds which has become especially popular over the last few decades. Pom owners adore their dogs and due to their size, they make a good choice for people who live in small apartments as well as those who have more space for their pet.
Description
You probably know more or less what a Pomeranian looks like, though you should remember that every Pom looks a little different. They are characterized by their large, almond shaped eyes set in a small, short muzzled face and their thick, long outer coats and soft undercoats. Poms come in a wide variety of colors, from black and white to orange, cream, tan, brindle, blue and many other mixtures. Especially small in size, Pomeranians may weigh as little as 3 pounds and range from 7″ to 12″ tall.
Temperament
The Pomeranian are dogs which are appealing even to people who do not normally like toy breeds. Independent, yet affectionate, Poms are good watch dogs, though their tendency to bark every time the doorbell rings is something that you may want to train them out of.
Pomeranians can be stubborn, so it is important to be firm and patient in their training. Their intelligence and aesthetic appeal has made them popular as show dogs and their small size lends them to lives as companion animals to elderly people who may have trouble caring for a large b
reed of dog.
Pomeranian Health Problems and Life Expectancy
Like many purebred dogs, this breed can be prone to certain health issues. In Pomeranians, these are tooth decay, eye infections, dislocated kneecaps and health problems. However, a healthy Pom who receives good veterinary care can live as long as 15 years and many of these dogs live long lives with few health problems.
Grooming
Since Pomeranians have so much fur and shed often, they must be groomed frequently. They need regular brushing to prevent tangles and mats. It will take some time to give your Pom the grooming the need, but your dog will definitely appreciate your efforts.
Before you decide to bring a Pomeranian home as your new pet, you need to learn as much as possible about the breed. You have to understand their personalities and know how to provide them with the care that they need to be happy and healthy. As long as you know how to properly care for your Pomeranian, they can be wonderful pets which are pleasant members of the family – and as long as they are well trained and socialized, they also get along well with other dogs and cats in your home, so you can adopt one even if you already have another pet.
